This church was built in 1905 and is one of the prettiest building in Aberdeen, I think. When I came to Aberdeen I noticed the windows in this church and thought they were spectacular. I found out from my in-laws that they had been featured in an article in one of the Memphis papers. That's when I went to the library and found out about their History and the TIFFANY connection. That's, when I first met Miss Peacock. Through the years i continue to be amazed that they are still there and not in the Tiffany Museum. They are priceless and perhaps on of Aberdeen's most valued assets. I thought this was an appropriate ending to my 365 series. Especially since a third of the 365 have in someway been inspired by Aberdeen and Monroe, Lee counties.

Today ends the commitment to do a t least on painting a day and post it. I have painted at least one a day this year and have posted at least one. In this series it grew to 380 you can see on the blog. I have done several more painting as commissions for others.

I am going to keep this blog and will post, off and own, others works of art that I do or have done. Ex. award winning pieces from the past that I want to share with my new FB friends.

Tomorrow is a new Beginning for  me. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!! and I'll cry if I want to.

"THE TURNAGE HOUSE, ABERDEEN, MISSISSIPPI"

This house has a "NAME" in front of it but for the life of me, I do not remember it and neither can I find it on Google. Some one tell me please. When I move to Aberdeen, in 1964 the Turnage family was living it it and that what I have always called it. It is definitely on my top 10 list of favorite houses in Aberdeen. It is located on Franklin Street (SILK STOCKING ROW). I have painted this house several times and that's why I wanted to just paint the tower with the beautiful trees and fence with it this time. Mike Smith, who went to college with my wife, owned the time I knew the owner, he still may own it.

Tomorrow is the last of my 365 series. and I hope to post probably a piece with , little know, but possibly the most significant, ART wise, piece in Aberdeen.

How many of my Huntsville FB friends remember Booger Town?

How many of my Aberdeen FB friends remember Coal Chute Bottom?

I'm posting these two today because they are so similar in concept, idea and reason for me doing them.

I was googling, the other day for shanty towns, and first image caught my eye. It brought back so many images in my head of smells, textures, and images of wet places and feelings of depressing things as a child. Where I lived and some of the things I grew up with. Come to find out that I was born less than a mile from the place where the googled photo was taken. That picture was of "Boogie Bottom" in Huntsville Ala. I was born in Lincoln Village. I remember when it rains it was so depressing to be out doors, the ground was always wet and smelly with all the chicken and animals all around. I can still smell those smells and feel the discomfort I had as a child.

The second Painting is from memory of "Coal Chute Bottom, in Aberdeen, Mississippi. When I first arrived in Aberdeen in 1964 I learned of this section of town. It was really depressing to see how the people lived and in what condition the people lived. later around 1965 my job took me into that part of town almost daily, I got to know the people living there and could appreciate how they existed. They were happy and contented people. I remember when my brother visited me in 1966, I took him to coal chute to show him the condition of the area and to let him meet some of the people. Of course we were invited in, (southern hospital is extended everywhere in Aberdeen) and when my brother sat down on the "couch" a pig ran out from under it between his legs. These areas no longer exist.

I think I'm running out of days for the things I still want to finish and post to this 365/2010 series.

I know I visited Hal and Ruth Bourland there once with my mother-in-law. The Bourlands went to church with us when we lived in Aberdeen and their children were such a joy to know and call friends.
The first time I saw this place it looked like an Andrew Wyeth subject. This is not the first time I've painted this house.

This Shed belong to my cousin Dallas Pence and is located somewhere near Paint Rock, Alabama.

I have become reacquainted with my cousin in the past three years after not seeing her for over 30 years. I love to visit her and her family. I hope I have done justice to part of her home place.

Old shed and barns have been a favorite subject of mine since I first began to do watercolor seriously in the early 70's.

This beautiful turn of the century is located in Nettleton, Mississippi and belongs to  new found friend, Bill

Farrar. I hope to post some work I did for bill later if I can still find the images. I love happening upon houses that just speak to me. Bill was raised in this house and after being away for sometime came back and decided to fix it up and make it his home. I love that kind of respect.

"CELEBRATING JESUS'S BIRTHDAY"

No. 365-I of my 365 2010 series.

This piece completes my Birthday celebrations of the famous artist and people who have influenced my life over the past 66 years. The colors in this painting are not Random. It is basically Yellows and Purples, Easter colors, without the Resurrection the birth would not be complete. The reds represent His shed blood. The greens a new life and rebirths and the blues Purification for all.

You will find hidden in this piece about 37 names by which the Bible refers to Jesus's names. The biggest and most prominent being JESUS AND IMMANUEL. I will list the others at the end of this post. Also hidden within the painting is a CROSS representing the death and burial. A city representing Bethlehem and a pyramid, and his journey into Egypt. You will find Dec. 15, A.D. 04, my personal belief the date by the roman calender. and THE STAR OF DAVID. You will find a piece of stem ware representing his first miracle. Here are some name to look for if you care to. Word, Lamb, Christ, Savior, Teacher, Way, Truth, Light, Prince of Peace, Mighty God, King of Kings, Son of God, Son of Man, Son of David, Apostle, Omega, Alpha, Prophet, Priest, Shepherd, Majesty, Redeemer, New Adam, Paraclete, Mediator, Messiah, Lord, and Head of the Church.

When you think about Jesus, and especially tomorrow, Remember all those names and what they all mean for us as Christians.

This is the place where my mother was born in, in the hills of East Tennessee. It is somewhere in Jackson County Tennessee. To the right You'll see my GREEN HORNET. I visited this place with my Grand father some time in the early 70's and it is so far back in the wood and under the hills, that he was still afraid of the moonshiners. So we didn't linger long. This was painted using an old Polaroid shot that was so faded and only browns in color. I remember everyone was a little afraid for me to get out of the car and take the picture. But, life is only an adventure, isn't it?

This is the last of the Mystery Houses in Aberdeen, that I know of. This piece is also done from a photo I got from Miss Peacock. On the back is written, "Still unidentified- Approximately 1903-1905.

Could be the I.M Johnson house across from the McDearmon house and the Clyde Wilson house. This could also be a rear or side view of the house. Notice the central, square, crowning element of the roof and the front structure on the extreme right. It is possible that this could have been a symmetrical structure, placing it between 2 streets. On the left, behind the tree, there seems to be another house."

Please, If anyone knows, or have any ideas about this house, I would appreciate any info.

This is done from one of the pictures Miss Peacock gave me to work from when I did the McDonalds store in Aberdeen, Mississippi in 1983. It is a scene of a lawn, tea or garden party on the lawn at the N.E. corner of Franklin and High streets in Aberdeen, Mississippi. When I got to Aberdeen in 1964 the third house in the photo was gone and I have never scene a photo of it. The other are still standing and are as pretty as ever. When I was living there the Robinson's lived in the first house and the

Turnages  lived in the last one showing. When McDonalds redecorated ,4-5 years back I bought back the 3X4 feet painting of this and gave it to my brother. He said if they ever got rid of it he wanted it.

This house is located on the NW corner of Long and Commerce st, in Aberdeen, Mississippi. I've only known it as the Strawbridge House because that's who lived there when I sold insurance in Aberdeen, in 1965. I know there is another name on a sign in front of it, anyone know for sure what it says, Name and Date. I believe someone a few years back tried to run a B&B out of it.

I love the big round porches on the house.

This is my post for Tomorrow the 19th. I'll be up and headed for Arkansas so I'm getting it posted as I've just finished it.

This is one of the smaller houses on Silk Stocking Row in Aberdeen, Mississippi, it is a very unique house. it seems to be longer than it is wide as you look at it from the front. It was built somewhere around 1892-1899 I've found both these date given for it building but can't pin point it. This little jewel sat empty for a couple of decades with very little attention. It now has a loving owner who has renovated it and it is beautiful from the street. I hope to get to see inside this summer.

Let's face it at 2 there just not that much life experiences except eating and sleeping and oh yeah Doctor's visit.

I was killing a little time in Nettleton one afternoon and noticed this structure back behind a house that I thought was in the middle of town. Went back behind the house and this was what I found. Some added features from the typical Mississippi barns. Right behind this bard was a lovely little private grotto of Flowers and devotional the statuary. Made a great discovery day.

For the next 16 pieces, 10 are already drawn and started, I'll consider any subjects you might like to see me try. Also they will be numbered 365-A and so on.

Anyway one of the most impressive homes in Aberdeen. It was the most impressive thing I first saw when I rolled into Aberdeen, on a Greyhound bus, one Sunday afternoon in 1964. And it still the image I first see in my head when one talks about the beautiful homes in Aberdeen. All the photos I've ever taken of this place is full of trees, blocking this kind of shot. This was painted from one of those early photos given to me by Miss Peacock. Notice the automobile in the drive way, I can't tell the year. Reuben Davis was a smart young man. Moved to Aberdeen at 15 years of age, and by the age of 19 had obtained enough education to have both a Doctors and Lawyers certification to practice. First working in Athens set out to live here. Served two term in the armies around the Civil wars and lost a bid for the office of Governor. Davis died in Huntsville Alabama, My home town.

I was inside the house only once, way before the Pilgrimages and saw it just as it was lived in and not for showcasing. It was amazing. Nearing the end of 365 but I won't stop posting till Dec. 31.

This little grocery is somewhere near Nettleton, Mississippi. I found it while I was wandering around near Nettleton last spring. I think it's north of Aberdeen on Coontail Road but not really sure.

I'm getting close to 365 pieces but that's because I have listed more than one on a few days. I'm still committed to one one a day till Dec. 31. Bear with me please.

I'm not sure this was a Diary Barn or not but that's what we always called it because cows were always around it. It was also a favorite marker for how close we were to grandma and grandpas house for Robin When she was a little girl. I was always amazed with the ceramic tiles on the outside of the barn. This place is located on Hwy 45 north on the way to Nettleton, Mississippi, north of Aberdeen, Mississippi.

I think this is one of the cutest little houses in Aberdeen. It is located ab out two blocks South of Commerce St. on the side of Meridian. I also think it was probably one of those house that was once much larger. I researched this place in the early 80's and could not find any older photos of it. It was built pre 1850 's. and is in the right place to be one of the larger house being built on lots of land during the building boom of the 1830-1850 period. It is also one of only two houses that I know of in Aberdeen that has extensive Red Glass use of windows, especially around the front doors.

This cabin is, or was, in Amory, Mississippi back int the early 90's. I was going to have a one man show at the museum there and was in Amory researching for things to paint for the show and ran across this at a little park there. I think it was part of the museum but am not sure. Does anyone know if it is still there? Can you imagine stories itcould tell from long ago?

I believe this is a 1941 Chevy Pickup, It is hard to tell from the photos I found on Google. the grill is the same on the 1941-46 pickups and the added extras on the photos are what people have possibly added as they repaired or restore them.  The two mirrows on this truck are not factor issued making it harder to really identify. I found this while roaming the roads between Splunge and Hatley Mississippi with friends last June. It was stareing at me from the side of the road and I couldn't pass it up. I need help here, Is this Prairie, Mississippi? I found this sketch in an older sketch book under Ghost Towns. I think I remember doing it on a photo shoot in Prairie. But I'm just not sure. I do remember it is on  the south side of the street looking north and I'm looking southeast. The sign on the corner building says "Foote Place and Pool Beer Food." The sign on the building to the right says " Leaf Plumbing Co." there was also a large sign, almost invisible, that advertised some company that sold furniture. Furniture was the only word I could make out. This was done sometimes in the early 60's.

These colors are not exaggerated. It was the most beautiful cloudless sunrise I've ever seen. McDonald's yellow, fire red and royal purple. It got a lot of attention, everyone was posting things like, "did you see the sunrise today, incredible!!

These exotic flowers were sketched first at the Crystal Bridge in Oklahoma City a few years back. I got to thinking about them and how colorful they were and the odd shapes that they grew in. They were the most orange things I had ever seen in nature and the lime greens were brilliant. I hope I've done them justice.

Built around 1879

the Lann and Carter Hardware was started business in 1879 by a coronal Lann, a farmer from the Athens community. It has a deep hardware history for the northeast part of Mississippi, especially Monroe county. Walter Lann the 11 and Walter the 11 still operate the family business in downtown Aberdeen. I worked for the Aberdeen Examiner in the early 70's and did a feature article on this old 3 story structure. In doing research for the story I found a story that said the sign on the side of the building was at one time the largest outdoor brick sign in the world. The building is no long there.

I hear all kinds of stories about it. The thing i remember most unusual is that the top floor was the funeral home. If you look closely at the sign there is a line that says "undertakers and embalmers"

This little shack was where my father-in-law, Johnny Hickman, always took my little girl
Robin when ever we were at their house. From the time she was able to discern things she loved the goats and that was their favorite thing to do. The shack was located north of town out on Mennonite Road. It was past the Minnonite community a few miles and we all loved to make the little ride. Now some 40+ years I wonder if it's still there? Anyone else remember this place?

This one is for my sister-in-law Gwen Scudder Anderson who lives in Searcy, Arkansas. I was visiting my brother, Bob and Gwen this summer on My way to Mississippi and Alabama and had a little time and wanted to see Northeast Arkansas. Gwen told me about Lapanto, Ak. and that her great grandmother was buried in this beautiful little cemetery. So I looked it up and this is what I found. It was a great little side trip. I found places like Jericho, Ak. and even a movie set left exactly as it was used.

Alice Scudder is buried in the Potter Memorial Cemetery, Lapanto, Poinsett County, Arkansas. Gwen never got to meet her Grandmother but does remember from her Mother about Alice's wonderful peanut butter cookies. I hope you like this Gwen.

George Seurat on of the post  impressionism most important artist and perhaps the best colorist of the day.

Seurat is know as the father of POINTILLISM for his color studies in pure color and the juxtaposition of them on top of each other. Seurat would have been 141 years old on this day had he still been living.

The little piece you see here is done all in the primary color paints, Red, Yellow and Blue. The greens, oranges, and purple shades all made by laying the other three paints on top of each other.

The dark, (NEUTRALS) are all mixed together. Yes, it is all painted using Q-Tips.

This is what the Egypt Baptist Church looked like in the late 80's. Egypt is located on Hwy 8 west of Aberdeen and on the way to Houston, just before you get to the new Hwy 45 intersection.
